Model T

Back in the early nineteen hundreds Henry Ford a farm boy came up with the world’s first gasoline engine. After he came up with the frame he built the model A. it only had about 8 horsepower to haul the thing which is not very efficient or affordable. Then came the model B and C and D…. and so fourth until the indivincible model T. It took a grueling nine years to even get this far. But it paid off for Mr. Ford, for now he had a car good enough and the average Joe could afford to buy it (ford model t F.A.Q).
Since all the other models before, it by far topped them all. From $800.00-$900.00 dollars it was affordable to almost everyone even during the tough economic times. At 20 horsepower it more than doubled the power of the ghetto model A. It also had increased speed and handling (McCarthy).

Did you know that the model T has an acetylene tank on the driver’s side running board to help to make the headlights brighter? The tires on the model t are not solid rubber they are inflated to 75 PSI. This helps to absorb shock on bumps with the stiff suspension. On cold winter days you nearly froze to death because the model T had virtually no heat at all. It is said though that the T would radiate heat back toward the cab to warm it up by 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit. In the early days of the model t it was almost 100% wood but in the later days it became steel which made it stronger but much heavier so it lost some power to be able to pull stuff and cruise (Ford model t f.a.q).

Back in the early 1900’s the average worker would make an average earning of $1-$3 dollars per day. That is not very much, but soon Henry Ford adapted the $5 dollar day to everyone of his employees so no one got more pay then the next guy down the line. When selling cars during tough economic times he could continue to do this while still making a profit (ford model t f.a.q).

Henry Ford also developed the assembly line. He quickly discovered that it was very fast and efficient. An assembly line is where the car gets sent down a line to stations. At each station a new part or group of parts is added to the car. The person at each station would get very used to doing their job. They become extremely quick at their job. He could do just what a business owner wants, put out more cars cheaper and faster (McCarthy).

In an interview with my grandfather Marvin. I asked him if he ever owned a ModelT. He replied "No but my brother Melvin owns one that he restored just recently". I also asked him if he liked the car very much he replied as though,"yes for an old car it was supreme and very affordable to the the avergae man".

Through out his life time Henry Ford was perhaps one of the best known men on the earth. The car could go faster and carry a bigger load than the horse and buggy. He was the turn into a new era of life. Sadly in 1947 he passed away to leave his empire for his family to care for and run it (McCarthy).

McCarthy, Pat.
